How to Handle a PO Box Address When Shipping to Canada So Your Parcel Isn’t Returned

Many Vietnamese people sending gifts or goods to family in remote parts of Canada run into a big problem: the recipient only has a post office box (PO Box), not a street address. Private couriers usually refuse to deliver to PO Boxes, so the order gets stuck at a transit warehouse or is sent back to the sender.

This article shows you how to solve this problem for good, so your goods reach the recipient in Canada smoothly.

Why do shipments to PO Boxes in Canada often fail?

In large provinces such as Alberta and Saskatchewan or in northern Ontario, many households in rural and remote areas don’t get door delivery from private couriers. Instead, they use a PO Box at their local Canada Post office to receive mail and parcels.

However, air express services usually contract last-mile delivery to domestic road partners. These partners can only deliver to a physical address where someone can sign for the parcel, and they have no access to Canada Post’s locked mailboxes. So if you write a PO Box as the delivery address on the label, the system will flag an error or the parcel will be held at the last-mile depot.

How to convert a PO Box to a physical address

To avoid your order being returned or lost, update the address details before shipping by following these steps:

Step 1: Ask the recipient for their actual home address

Ask the recipient in Canada for the address where they actually live instead of their postal address. Even in remote areas, every home has an address registered with the local government (house number, street name or rural route number).

Step 2: Use the address of the nearest post office

If the area is so remote that large vehicles can’t reach it at all, the recipient can use the “General Delivery” service at their nearest Canada Post office. The address is then written as:

  • The recipient’s name
  • The words “General Delivery”
  • The town, province and postal code of that post office.

Step 3: Provide a Canadian phone number (mandatory)

This is the most important detail. When the parcel reaches the last-mile depot near the recipient, the driver will call to arrange the most convenient delivery point (for example, a town-centre parking lot or a local convenience store the recipient knows). Without a working Canadian phone number, the order will almost certainly be returned.

Key tips for successful last-mile delivery

When preparing goods for Canada, keep these points in mind as well as the address:

  • Pack to standard: The standard shipping fee includes a basic carton. Heavy, oversized or fragile goods that need a wooden crate or pallet carry a surcharge, which we confirm clearly in advance.
  • Declare your goods: Don’t send prohibited items such as drugs, cash, dangerous goods or cremated remains. Food and products containing lithium batteries must be declared in detail so they can be checked against the clearance rules in force at the time.
  • Flexible payment: You can pay by bank transfer, credit card, Interac e-Transfer or cash at our office.
